The Republic in Rome

This week we talked about Rome, and are supposed to write a paper on one of the things we talked about. I chose to write about how their government, the Republic, was organized and how it works. I hope you enjoy it. 

The republic wasn’t the first form of government in Rome. Rome actually had a king that ruled at first, but as we learned earlier this week, that didn’t work out, so they switched to Republic.  The republic worked really well for Rome, as you would know if you have studied it.

The people who ruled Rome were called the consuls. They were 2 men elected to be the consuls every 5 years. There was also the senate like we have today. It was made of 100 members and they made laws and kind of kept things in order. You typically had to be in the senate before you could be a consul. Another part of their government was the sensors. They were 2 elected every 5 years. The sensors really just revised the population and got rid of families who have caused problems, or people who had a reason for getting banished. The Pretors are what I’m going to talk about next. They were 8 men who were basically judges. We didn’t talk about them much, but as you could guess, they were very important in the city of Rome. The Aediles were part of government who supervised public events, and they also sponsored the Roman games. The next people we talked about were the Questors, which were 20 financial administrators. The last person we talked about was the Dictator. You might say he was one of the most important people in the republic because he took control of the nation in emergencies. If they were under attack, or going into war, he would take over, but could only rule for 6 months. 

As I said before, this was a very effective government for Rome. Although the had disagreements and differences, they got around them so Rome could prosper. The republic lasted in Rome for 470 years.
