Roman Clothing

This week in history, we studied ancient Rome’s culture. I chose to write an essay on Roman clothing. In the same lesson, we also talked about their bathhouses, so I will say something about that too. Stay tuned to learn more.

Men and women wore different clothing, but they both wore large pieces of cloth made of wool or linen, held by a belt or pins. The cloth could be dyed or bleached if desired, but it was very expensive. The overall fashion, though, was influenced by the current emperor. Men typically wore a knee length tunic with a toga. They had hair on the shorter side and wore beards. Women on the other hand wore a tunic as well, but also wore a stola that covered it. A palla (scarf) would usually be draped over their hair. They had their hair in a simple bun, and lots of makeup on their face. The rich women wore jewelry. As you could probably guess, they both wore shoes. The shoes were usually leather sandals, but some would wear boots if they were in the army or worked outside.

Next, I’m going to talk about the bathhouses. Like you would expect, they started out as just being a place to take a shower and go to the bathroom. Like you probably wouldn’t expect, they started doing more “business” in there than just one kind. (get what I said there? Business ; )) Believe it or not, the bathrooms became one of the most popular places to hang out. They made these places bigger and better for people to have more room to eat, entertain, and be entertained. When there was a new emperor, they would buy a free bathhouse day for all the people to be in their favor.

As you can see, the ancient Roman culture was different than ours, but they are also the same in some ways. Our fashion today, is usually influened by someone atleast somewhat. There are other differences and similarities. See if you can spot the others. Have a tremendous day.
