History Week 4 Review

Assignment: Pretend that you are in the Continental Congress. Write about how you think a meeting went.

I am sick of all this taxes. Parliament just needs to stop trying to steal money from us. They just want to get more and more money while we’re the ones suffering. Something needs to happen.

This is what a lot of the people in America thought at this time when the government was taxing everything, but no body did anything about it. In order for something to change, somebody had to do something. This is where the Continental Congress comes into play.

The Continental Congress was a very small group of people that decided that they would be the first ones to actually take a stand against parliament. It started with just a few people, then it grew as more people wanted to join in. This group of people had meetings to discuss how they would deal with the acts that parliament took.

Since the assignment is to pretend that I am part of the Continental Congress, I will now pretend that I am in one of their meetings. Here’s how I think a meeting might have gone:

Hello everyone. I welcome you to this meeting. I called this meeting to discuss what we will do about this new tea act that they put into place. As all of you know, Parliament has now put a heavy tax on tea. I personally don’t have any idea about what we should do about this. “I think that we should just keep smuggling stuff in like we have been doing” “But we still wouldn’t be getting enough tea for what we normally drink in a day” “What if we all just move somewhere else?” “That’s not a good idea. We all wanted to come to this new world, we’re not going through the trouble of moving just to get away from taxes on everything.” “What is we all just stoped drinking tea?” The room goes silent. That thought hadn’t crossed anybody’s mind before. “You know, that could work. We could smuggle in some tea so we could still drink it, but not buy any from Britain’s stores. I like that idea” Of course, not everybody liked this idea, but we voted, and that’s what we decided to do.

Sorry if that reenactment was a little confusing, I didn’t really know how to type it the way I wanted to. I did my best. Any way, That is just one of the examples of the committee meetings. Just 8 months after the Continental Congress formed and had their first meeting, the Revolutionary war broke out. I think that’s kind of crazy.

I hope you liked this essay, and thank you for reading. Have a good day/night!
